Funeral Readings
67When you lose someone...
When you lose someone you care about it is very difficult to think straight and still try and find what you need to celebrate their life. One of the things I found most comforting was specially written funeral readings - it made speaking in public much easier at a time when my emotions were running high. In my research I came across a few ideas that helped me - I hope they will help you too.
Funeral Readings
form of emotional relief with huge positive effect
A lot of people read out funeral readings at wakes and funerals. They have a lot of positive effect because something which is beautifully written and sensible expressed can actually have a soothing effect on the bereaving. There is a growing collection of funeral readings. Some people even write it themselves and some choose to just quote a William Shakespeare or some famous poem. But in any case funeral readings serve like an ode to the person who died.
For every person grief is the most difficult to face and the loss of someone who we cared about is very hard to cope. Only time can heal such grief. However, if there are words of comfort sometimes they can help the mourners by giving them a different perspective of the miserable event. We learn to cope with the situation at least temporarily. Writing and reading funeral readings is very good for the grieving family until the funeral process is complete. It is a form of emotional support.

When you are searching for funeral readings you have to really think about the person that you are honoring with these words. Each person is different and when you read through the poems you will feel whether the words are right or not. If the words don't fit the person then keep looking, these are the words which you want them to be remembered by. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or feels about the readings which you have chosen, if the funeral readings relate to the person in your eyes, use them.
There is a great deal of funeral readings which are written by famous poets. At the same time there are also lots of funeral readings which are written by anonymous people and they are great. If you know the person very well you can write about him/her in your own words too. However make sure that it is not overwhelming, because it might upset the bereaving family. A poem should be written very gently and sensitively.
Writing about a person who is no longer alive is very difficult and writing about their death is even worse. A funeral reading should be not just writing down your feelings, but short story about the person and their journey through the life. People should realize through the poem that they lived with a kind soul and great person.
